Earthenware teapot
Add to album

This teapot was made by W. & J.A. Bailey's pottery at Alloa in Clackmannanshire. It dates from the second half of the 19th century. In its heyday the pottery at Alloa was said to make 40,000 teapots a week.

The glazed teapot is relief moulded, with a regular 'diaper' design, in a technique sometimes known as 'cane-ware'.

Alloa was an important coal mining centre, and a pottery (and eventually a glassworks) were established by the 1790s to take advantage of the abundant fuel and locally available clay. The pottery at Alloa finally closed in 1907.
