Ashet
Add to album

An ashet is a large plate, platter or serving dish. This earthenware example is transfer-printed with the willow pattern and is marked on the bottom with a Glasgow tree mark and the initials, 'J G & Sons'; possibly for John Geddes & Son. It dates from the first half of the 19th century.

The willow pattern traditionally includes a river, a bridge, a pagoda and willow trees and is usually in blue on a white background.

The Glasgow potteries produced a wide range of wares, from high quality porcelain to the ubiquitous transfer printed earthenware. Many of them exported to several parts of the world.
