Plate commemorating the Glasgow International Exhibition, 1888

This earthenware plate, made by North British Pottery, commemorates the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888.

The plate depicts Kelvingrove Art Galleries with the gardens in the foreground. The Galleries were a direct result of the 1888 exhibition, and were completed in time for the opening of the 1901 exhibition.

Glasgow hosted international exhibitions in 1888 and 1901. People flocked to the exhibitions from all over the country, bringing revenue to local hotels and businesses. Scottish produce from railway engineering to pottery vied with international exhibits.
