Toby jug, of Souter Johnny

This cream glazed stoneware toby jug was probably made at Crowe's pottery at Montrose in Angus. It dates from the second half of the 19th century. It takes the form of 'Souter Johnny'- a character from Robert Burns' poem 'Tam O'Shanter'. A souter was a shoemaker or cobbler.

Cream glazed Toby jug of Souter Johnnie, probably by Crowe of Montrose

In the 18th and 19th centuries, a few Scottish potteries existed in the north-east of the country, mainly catering for local markets.
