Soup plate
Add to album

This earthenware soup plate was made between around 1880 and 1900 by Glasgow potters J. and M.P. Bell. It was produced for export to South East Asia.

The plate has a centre design of a dragon and an exotic bird with large feathers, set against a background of stylised clouds.

Bells started exporting early on in their history, certainly by the 1860s. Their trade with the east was particularly important and grew in the 1870s. After John Bell's death in 1880, the new limited company continued with this trade.
