Made in Glasgow

Soup plate
Add to album

This earthenware soup plate was made around 1840 at R.A. Kidston & Co's pottery in Glasgow. The plate was acquired in south-east Asia, and was one of the many pieces of Glasgow pottery exported there.

The plate has a flat scalloped edge. In the centre is a transfer-printed view of Edinburgh (here spelt 'Edingburgh') from Kidston's 'United Kingdom' series of prints.

Robert Kidston helped run the firm from 1827 and became sole owner in 1838. Robert Cochran became his partner in 1845 and two years later took over as Robert Cochran & Co.
