This earthenware plate was produced as an advertisement for Drummond's Central China and Glass Warehouse in Glasgow. It was made around 1881-2.

The centre of the plate is decorated with a picture of Glasgow Cross, together with the name and address of the retailer. The rim of the plate is divided into 12 sections, each one detailing items which could be purchased from the retailer.

In Victorian times, as more products and services became available, manufacturers and shopkeepers competed with each other in an attempt to appeal to the customer. Advertising grew and became more colourful and sophisticated.
