Dessert plate, made at Alloa, Clackmannanshire
Add to album

This earthenware dessert plate was made in the late 19th century at W. & J.A. Bailey's pottery at Alloa in Clackmannanshire. The plate was part of a service, sometimes stamped with 'Made on the Estate of the Earl of Mar & Kellie'.

The plate is glazed in brown, light blue and green, with an outline in leaf form. It is moulded with leaves, flowers and grapes and has a pierced grip handle.

Alloa was an important coal mining centre, and a pottery (and eventually a glassworks) were established by the 1790s to take advantage of the abundant fuel and locally available clay. The pottery at Alloa finally closed in 1907.
