Plaque with a portrait of Queen Victoria
Add to album

This earthenware plaque commemorates Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee of 1897. It comes from Preshome Chapel House in Banffshire. Many homes in the late 19th century had mementoes of the Queen Empress.

The plaque's design includes a crowned portrait of Victoria, surrounded by a Latin inscription which translates as 'Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen of Britain, Defender of the Faith, Empress of India'. Below the portrait are the royal arms.

Queen Victoria reigned as queen of the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901.
