Chamber pot of Wemyss ware, c. 1895
Add to album

This white glazed earthenware chamber pot was made at Robert Heron's Pottery in Kirkcaldy in Fife around 1895. It is part of a Wemyss Ware toilet set which came from Philiphaugh House near Selkirk.

The sides of the pot curve out from a very small straight foot to form a bulbous body which is hand painted with pink cabbage roses. There is a decorated strap handle at one side.

In the 19th century, potteries grew in number to meet the increased demand. The largest firms were near the Forth and Clyde rivers. Kirkcaldy became a major centre with four main firms including Robert Heron & Co, famous for their prestigious Wemyss ware.
