Earthenware jar
Add to album

This earthenware jar was made in the Port Dundas Pottery in Glasgow. It was produced for George Bayne in Dunbar in East Lothian and dates from the second half of the 19th century.

The jar has a short thick neck and a strap handle. On the shoulder opposite the handle the jar is impressed with '57, George Bayne, Dunbar'.

In Victorian times, advertising grew and was used by manufacturers as a way of appealing to their customers. Brand goods were developed and certain types of container were recycled. These included jars which were a useful means of advertising products.
