Earthenware warming plate
Add to album

This earthenware warming plate was made in the 19th century at D. Crowe's pottery at Montrose. The plate has a hollow body which was filled with hot water to keep food on the plate warm.

The glazed plate consists of a deep plate with a filler spout standing on a wavy-edged foot. The base is marked 'D.Crowe/Montrose'.

Several potteries existed in the north-east of Scotland, mainly catering for local markets.
