Mug (1 of 2)

This shows one side of a glazed earthenware mug which dates from around 1840. The inscription on the front reads 'Peter Burns Swinton'.

The mug has a plain rim, a cushion foot and an almost circular 'C' shaped handle. Both sides of the mug are decorated with red flowers.

Peter Burns Swinton (1827-1912) was born in Gifford in East Lothian. He undertook legal training and became factor of Yester Estate in Gifford.
