The gird (Scots for 'hoop') and cleek (Scots for 'hook') was a child's toy in the late 19th century. This gird and cleek is made of iron and was found at Fisherrow in Midlothian.

Iron gird and cleik found at Fisherrow, Musselburgh

The children of working-class families relied for play on home-made toys and street games. As the 19th century went on, better-off children had access to an increasing range of toys and books. This Gird & Cleet looks like the type with a ring holding both together, which was very difficult to use. The easier to use cleek had a U shape at the bottom which pushed the Gird.
