Balance beam, used in burgh of Dunbar, East Lothian

This bronze hanging balance beam is part of set of weights, measures and scales used in the burgh of Dunbar in East Lothian. The beam was made in Auchtermuchty in Fife and was used to measure a weight of 56 pounds.

The maker's stamp, 'J. White & Son, Makers, Auchtermuchty' can be seen on the right hand arm of the beam.

To ensure fair trade, burghs each kept a set of standard weights and measures against which those in commercial use could be checked.
