Weighing balance

This brass weighing balance, together with brass coin weights, was possibly owned by John Craig of Hatton Knowe in Eddleston in Peeblesshire. It dates from the late 15th or early 16th century. It is pictured here with its original tin container.

The weighing balance has a steel balance arm and suspension device. The ends of the arms have a 'C'-curve from which the pans are suspended by black cotton cords.
