Ring known as the Four peers ring

This gold and enamel ring is known as the 'Four Peers' ring. It commemorates the four Jacobite lords - Kilmarnock, Derwentwater, Balmerino and Lovat - who were executed in 1746 and 1747 for their part in the Jacobite rising of 1745.

The gold ring has a rectangular bezel with crowns at the corners. The initials 'B', 'D', 'L' and 'K' are inscribed in each corner and in the middle is the inscription 'L a...AP K 18 B AU D 8 DEC' around an executioner's axe and the date 1746.

A family tradition says that these rings were made by the Edinburgh goldsmith, Ebenezer Oliphant, who made Prince Charles's silver travelling canteen.
