Bronze and enamel candlestick

This bronze and enamel pricket candlestick was made in Limoges in France in the 14th century. It was given to Pope John Paul II as a gift to commemorate his visit to Scotland. The Pope entrusted it to the Museum.

The candlestick has a six-sided base enamelled with heraldic shields. The coat of arms on these shields is probably of Gaucelin d'Euse, nephew of Pope John XXII.

John XXII was the pope who recognised Robert I ('The Bruce') as King of Scots.
