Pendant

This jet pendant was found at Lauder in Berwickshire. It was an expensive religious amulet, worn sometime between 900 and 1100.

The pendant is in the shape of a cross, decorated with six incised dot-and-circles. The shape is reminiscent of monumental stone crossheads from the period.

The only significant source of good quality jet occurs around Whitby in Yorkshire, although jet-related substances such as cannel coal and lignite are known from several places in Scotland. Jet was used in Scotland for high status objects.
