Coins & badges

These coins and badges were found at St Querdon's Well at St Troqueer, south-west of Dumfries. Dating from the 17th century onwards, they were placed there as gifts by those in search of good health.

Coins etc. from St Querdon's Well, Troqueer

Other gifts placed at wells were pins, nails and rags or 'clooties'. At 'clootie' wells, rags or cloths were - and still are - left to represent the ills of the patient.
