Seal matrix of St Magnus Cathedral
Add to album

This is the brass seal matrix of St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall in Orkney. It dates from the 14th century.

The matrix depicts a figure holding a sword, with two kneeling, praying figures on either side.

Seals are evidence of the paperwork involved in running a complex organisation. They were signs of the medieval Church's huge authority, combining the functions of signature and logo to show that documents were genuine.
