Seal matrix, of the Burgh of Burntisland, Fife
Add to album

This is the seal matrix of the Burgh of Burntisland in Fife. It dates from the 16th century and is made of bronze.

The matrix depicts a three-masted ship. Around the edge is a Latin inscription which translates as: 'Seal of the Burgh of Burntisland'. There are thistles between the words.

As centres of local government, burghs had their own seals which were used on documents to represent identity, authority and status. Like coats-of-arms, the images on them illustrate aspects of the burghs' origins and activities.
