Seal matrix
Add to album

This bronze seal matrix of the Friars Preachers (Blackfriars) of Perth dates from the 15th century.

The matrix has an image of the Virgin and Child, adored by a kneeling friar. The Latin inscription 'S. OFFICI PRIORIS ORD PREDICATORVM. DE. PTH' translates as 'Seal of the Office of the Prior of the Friars Preachers of Perth'.

The seals fixed to church documents were usually made of beeswax, softened by heat and attached with a cord or tag to a document. A mould (matrix) was used to make the impression in soft wax.
