Seal matrix, of Incorporation of Hammermen of Dundee

This brass seal matrix of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Dundee dates from the 16th century.

The matrix shows a figure of St Eloi as a bishop, with a mitre. In his right hand he holds a hammer, and in his left a crosier. Beneath is a shield bearing arms in the form of a hammer crowned. At each side is a vase of lilies, symbolic of Dundee.

'Smiths' or those who worked with metals were the largest group within the Incorporation of Hammermen (those who used hammers in their trade).
