Seal matrices of the Great Seal of Scotland
Add to album

These two silver seal matrices, dating from between 1830 and 1837, are the obverse and reverse of the Great Seal of Scotland of William IV.

The obverse depicts the king on horseback, the reverse, the royal arms.

The 1707 Treat of Union stated that there was to be 'one Great Seal of the United Kingdom'. However, it went on to state that there were to be separate seals in Scotland, as the continuation of the separate Scottish legal system made them necessary.
