Add to album

This brass lantern clock was made by Humphry Mills of Edinburgh in the late 17th century. This type of clock was made to sit on a wall bracket.

The clock was driven by weights which would have been suspended on braided ropes. Much of the original movement of the clock is now missing. The engraved floral dial has a single hand and is signed 'Humphry Mills fecit'.

Humphry Mills (or Milne) was admitted to the Incorporation of Hammermen of Edinburgh in 1660, and later elected Deacon of the Incorporation. A fine clockmaker, he was also very wealthy and on several instances lent money to the Hammermen.
