This movement from a pocket watch was dug up near the site of the Battle of Prestonpans which took place in 1745. Dating from around 1700, the movement was one of the earliest donations to the Museum of the Society of Antiquaries.

The movement is engraved, 'I Moncrief, London'.

David Steuart Erskine, 11th Earl of Buchan, an antiquarian and collector, founded the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1780.
