Front of a gold mourning ring

This is the front of a gold mourning ring commemorating Ann Rigg who died on 2 March 1796, aged 34.

The ring has an oval bezel, set with glass enclosing a painting of a woman sitting on a pedestal inscribed 'AR'.

At funerals in the 18th and 19th century, wealthier families distributed rings and lockets made from the hair of the deceased, or engraved with the name and date.
