Add to album

This large oval mourning ring commemorates the death of Reverend Adam Gib who died on 18 June 1788. Known as 'Pope Adam', Gib was the first minister of the Associate Congregation at Edinburgh, and a leading Anti-Burgher.

The inscription on black enamel around the edge of the ring reads, 'Revd Adam Gib died 18 June 1788 aged 74'. The sepia painting in the centre of the ring is of a female figure seated beside a tomb and urn.

Associate churches were formed throughout the 18th century by congregations who felt strongly about the patronage Act of 1712 which reaffirmed patrons' rights.
