Add to album

This bronze piece of ladle is from Premnay in Aberdeenshire. It dates from the 17th century.

The piece forms the bowl of the ladle.

The cast bronze cooking utensils which survive from the Middle Ages are ideally suited for cooking both meat and porridge or gruel made from oatmeal. The importance of meat in the Scottish diet, for rich and poor, was unusual in Europe.
