Quill cutter
Add to album

A quill cutter was used to cut feather quills to the required shape for writing. This example is made of ivory.

A brass plate is screwed to the top surface of the cutter.

Writing letters became an increasingly important means of long distance contact as postal services improved. Basic writing materials were pen, ink and paper, but quill cutters, sand dredges, and writing sets were all part of the letter-writer's equipment.
