Tirling pin

Tirling pins were fitted on town house doors. They consisted of a ring and a serrated rod, along which the ring could be rattled. This example is from the door of Cardinal Beaton's house in Blackfriars Wynd in Edinburgh. It is made of iron and dates from the 17th century.
