Money chest

This is a 17th-century iron money chest of the sort used by trading companies such as the Company of Scotland. The chest is a typical European, Renaissance device.

The chest has a complicated lock of 15 spring bolts. The Germans were particularly good at light engineering at this time and they began the contemporary fashion for complicated locks.

Scotland, especially after the Reformation, was keen to gain a trading empire. In 1695 the Company of Scotland was set up by the Scottish parliament in an attempt to develop overseas trade and to establish a colony in central America.
