Tea set, owned by Mr & Mrs J Keir Hardie

This silver tea set was given to Mr and Mrs J Keir Hardie on the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary. Made by 'HW' of Sheffield, the set dates from 1905-6.

The set consists of a teapot, cream jug and sugar basin. The teapot is engraved on the side, 'To Mr & Mrs J Keir Hardie from a few socialist friends on the occasion of their silver wedding'.

Hardie was a supporter of the temperance movement and took the pledge when he was seventeen. He felt the 'demon drink' contributed to poverty and misery among the working class.
