Ceremonial standard, associated with the Douglas of Cavers Family
Add to album

This painted silk ceremonial standard is associated with the Douglas of Cavers family, hereditary sheriffs of Roxburghshire. It probably dates from the late 16th century.

The standard includes a lion and the traditional Douglas emblem of the heart.

The Douglases were a powerful family who, in medieval times, dominated much of southern Scotland. Their adoption of the heart as their emblem derived from the fact that Sir James Douglas was entrusted with Robert the Bruce's heart after his death in 1329
