This detail shows the hilt of a sword owned by Alexander Peden, a Covenanting minister from Ayrshire. The sword dates from between around 1626-86.

Plug bayonet with wooden hilt which belonged to Alexander Peden

Alexander Peden was an Ayrshire field preacher and leading Covenanter who was admired and revered and often spoken of as a prophet. He travelled in disguise through south and southwest Scotland to conduct forbidden services, known as conventicles.
