From Iona Nunnery

Gold fillet
Add to album

This gold fillet was found under the floor of St Ronan's Chapel at Iona Nunnery. It dates from the 13th century. Wealthy women wore gold fillets in their hair to keep a thin net or veil in place.

The gold fillet is decorated by running scrolls in repoussé.

The earliest buildings of the religious establishment on Iona were founded by Columba after his arrival on the island in 563. The nunnery dates from the early 13th century.
