Silk banner of the Turriff Shoemaker's Society
Add to album

This silk banner of the Turriff Shoemaker's Society in Aberdeenshire dates from the early 19th century.

The banner is made of three lengths of blue silk stitched together. The central shield features the Shoemakers' coat-of-arms of a crowned knife.

In the early 18th century, the trades societies protected member's rights, maintained quality and were involved in burgh government. In the 18th and 19th centuries, as industrialisation took over, the role of the trades societies became mainly ceremonial.
