Rattle, used by Edinburgh Fire-fighters

This wooden fire rattle was used as an alarm in early-19th-century Edinburgh. It was swung around to produce a loud 'clacking' sound.

Spring-rattle of wood, used as a fire alarm in Edinburgh about the beginning of the 19th century

Edinburgh had fire-fighters since at least 1702, but only after a disastrous fire in the High Street, in 1824, was a more effective fire brigade set up.
