Firemark, of the Insurance Company of Scotland

In the 18th and 19th century, insurance companies fixed their own firemarks to the buildings they covered to allow their fire brigades to recognise 'their' buildings. This is the firemark of the Insurance Company of Scotland. It is made of copper.

The firemark is inscribed 'INSURANCE COMPANY OF SCOTLAND'. It bears a crown above a sword and crossed sceptres.

With the development of municipal fire-fighting services, insurance companies adjusted their business to provide financial cover for loss or damage caused by fire.
