Sheepskin letter bag

This sheepskin letter bag dates from 1736. It was used to carry letters between the Rosses of Pitcalnie in Ross-shire and their lawyer, John Grant, who practised in Edinburgh.

Sheepskin bag used to carry letters between the Rosses of Pitcalnie and John Grant, their lawyer in Edinburgh, 1763 and after

After the development of the horse post in the early 18th century the delivery of letters was speeded up. By 1786 the first mail coach from London to Edinburgh was in service and by 1798 this service had been extended to Aberdeen.
