A sampler is a piece of embroidery executed as an example of the embroiderers' skill in using a variety of stitches. This example of wool stitched on unbleached linen was sewn by Janet Forbes of Cullen in 1854.

In the centre of the sampler are the words: 'Believe on the lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved and thy house.'

Samplers gave girls an opportunity to develop and show skills in needlework.
