A sampler is a piece of embroidery executed as an example of the embroiderer's skill in using a variety of stitches. This example was made in 1899 by Margaret Galloway Crow of Bruntsfield Public School in Edinburgh.

The sampler is of cream coloured linen with red and blue silk embroidery.

From 1872, under the Education (Scotland) Act, a Scottish Education Department was set up and all children between the ages of five and thirteen were to go to school. Most schools were paid for from public funds.
