Netting tools

This selection of sewing tools were used to make netting, a fine meshed cloth rather like lace. Netting was used for veils, hat shapes, dresses, curtains and trimmings.

The threads and yarns used in netting were crossed so that their intersections were knotted or looped, forming a geometrically shaped mesh.

Work in the textile and garment trades was a major employer of poor girls and women. It could be done at home, with little equipment, alongside other duties such as childcare.
