Pair of Fair Isle stockings

This pair of woollen stockings were handknitted in a Fair Isle pattern. This complex, brightly coloured pattern originated in Shetland.

One of a pair of stockings knitted in a Fair Isle pattern

In the 18th century most fashionable people bought stockings knitted on a frame. Stockings for the poorer end of the market continued to the handknitted. By the 19th century only Shetland was still handknitting regularly on a commercial basis.
