Basket

This shallow, rectangular basket with wicker-covered bow handle was used by fishwives in Thurso in Caithness.

The basket has four spars underneath which allow it to stand upright.

For centuries it was the land which supplied the resources of everyday life for most people in Scotland. It provided the materials for homes, furnishings and belongings. In some remote areas the use of local materials continued well into the 20th century.
