Wooden case for a Jew's harp rudely cut out of the solid, with "A G" cut on the lid, "I G" four times on the body, dated 1781

In spite of losing the patronage and social focus of the royal court when it moved to London in 1603, 18th-century Scotland enjoyed a vigorous music culture. Musical performances and formal dancing as well as drama and the stage became popular.
