Pieces of carved slate

These pieces of slate were shaped in the 19th century by a patient in Rosewell Asylum in Midlothian.

The pieces of slate have been shaped to resemble hearts.

Acts passed in 1857 and 1862 provided a system of publicly-funded accommodation for mentally ill people.
