Sedan chairA sedan chair was an enclosed chair for one person, carried on poles by two men. This example was used in Edinburgh by Alexander Hamilton (1739-1802) and his son James (d.1839). Both men were Professors of Obstetrics at the University of Edinburgh. Private sedan chair used in Edinburgh until 1830 by Professor Hamilton James Hamilton was succeeded as Professor of Obstetrics by Sir James Young Simpson, the pioneer of the use of chloroform as an anaesthetic.
