Iron quoit
Add to album

In the game of quoits the player attempts to encircle an upright peg by throwing a ring of metal or rope, known as a 'quoit'. This is the upper side of an iron quoit, dating from around 1920 and made by Houston's of Johnstone in Renfrewshire.

The quoit weighs 17 lbs. It has a moulded handgrip at the top.

Quoits was a popular Victorian and Edwardian game. Playing with heavy quoits like this one called for men who were used to hard physical labour. The cast iron or steel quoits weighed 10 lbs or more and were thrown at a metal pin 21 yards distant.
